For several years, scientists had been watching a long crack in the floating ice shelf of the northerly Petermann Glacier. On Monday, NASA satellites showed it had broken completely, forming an iceberg covering 46 square miles (120 sq. kilometers).
The same glacier spawned an iceberg twice that size two years ago.
Researchers suspect global warming is to blame, but cannot prove it conclusively yet. Many of Greenland's southern glaciers have been melting at an unusually rapid pace. Government scientist Ted Scambos says this break brings large ice loss much farther north.
Scientists also reported that the Arctic had the largest sea ice loss on record for June.

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - A European report on Wednesday identified serious failings in the Vatican's scandal-plagued bank, sharply criticizing its management and giving the Holy See a negative rating in almost half the most important transparency-related criteria.
The milestone report, by Moneyval, a department of the Council of Europe, suggests the Vatican still has a long way to go before it can be included on an international "white list" of countries that abide by global norms on combating money laundering, the financing of terrorism and tax evasion.
The Vatican said it saw the 241-page report as a constructive starting point that would allow it to improve its financial controls rather than as a conclusion.
"We take both the praise and the criticism contained in the report with seriousness," said Monsignor Ettore Balestrero, who headed the Vatican team that worked with the report's authors.
The report comes at a time when the Vatican is battling to limit the fallout from a corruption scandal with Pope Benedict's butler suspected of leaking sensitive documents that allege wrongdoing in the Vatican's business dealings with Italian companies.
It was particularly pointed in its criticism of the management of the Vatican bank, officially known as the Institute for Works of Religion (IOR), and "strongly recommended" it be "independently supervised by a prudential supervisor in the near future".
Lack of independent supervision posed "large risks to the stability" of the Holy See's financial sector, the report said, an apparent suggestion that the bank should be fully independent of a committee of five cardinals who currently oversee it.
Senior management at the IOR lacked "fit and proper criteria", it added.
The IOR, whose tellers work under the gaze of crucifixes, is being investigated by Italian magistrates looking into money laundering. The bank is housed in the 15th-century Tower of Nicholas V, which Pope Benedict can see from his apartment windows.
The report did say that the Vatican had "come a long way in a short period of time" in making reforms and that many of the "building blocks" to combat money laundering were in place, even though more had to be done before it could join the international club of financial righteousness.
OUSTING
In 2010, Rome magistrates froze 23 million euros ($33 million) that the IOR held in an Italian bank. The Vatican said at the time that its bank had done nothing wrong and was merely transferring its own funds between its own accounts in Italy and Germany. The money was released in June 2011, but the investigation is continuing.
In a dramatic twist, the IOR's former president, Italian Gotti Tedeschi was ousted in a boardroom battle on May 24. He said he was fired because he wanted the bank to be more transparent, but the Vatican said he was an obstacle to transparency.
He was ousted a day after the arrest of the pope's butler, Paolo Gabriele, who has been held in relation to the leaking scandal in a small "safe room", in the Vatican's police station, where he prays daily. He was denied house arrest last week.
The Vatican has been trying to shed its image as a suspect financial centre since 1982, when Roberto Calvi, an Italian known as "God's Banker" because of his links to the Vatican, was found hanging from London's Blackfriars Bridge.
Although Vatican officials say they are determined to improve financial transparency in order to qualify for inclusion on the global white list, Wednesday's report showed they have their work cut out.
It awarded the Vatican negative grades of "partially compliant" or "non compliant" on seven of the 16 so-called core and key recommendations, while handing out grades of "compliant" or "largely compliant" on the other nine.
The seven negative grades included insufficient customer due diligence, insufficient compliance on reporting of suspicious transactions, and insufficient supervision and monitoring.
"There are seven areas where the Holy See must and will focus on," Balestrero said.
Moneyval, "The Committee of Experts on the Evaluation of Anti-Money Laundering Measures and the Financing of Terrorism", is a monitoring mechanism of the 47-nation Council of Europe that tries to ensure that member states comply with international financial standards.
Moneyval does not maintain its own "white list", but supplies information which could eventually be used by other organizations, such as the Financial Action Task Force (FATF), to determine whether the Vatican belongs on a "black" or "grey" list of countries that fail to measure up.
Any such decision is at least a year away, and would depend on a follow-up evaluation of how well the Vatican implements recommendations in Wednesday's report.
Balestrero said the Vatican would try to implement all the recommendations contained in the seven negative scores before the progress report.
VATICAN REFORM
The Moneyval evaluation, which the Vatican requested several years ago, grades a country against 49 recommendations, of which 16 are deemed "core and key".
It is not uncommon for countries to receive partially compliant or non-compliant marks on their first and even subsequent evaluations, accompanied by suggestions on how to improve.
Vatican sources compared the performance to Italy, which they said had five non-compliant or partially compliant marks on "core and key" recommendations in a 2005 evaluation, years after it began its evaluation process by FATF.
In 2010, the Vatican drafted new financial transparency laws and set up internal regulations to make sure its bank and all other departments that administer the Catholic Church around the world adhered to international standards on money laundering and terrorism financing.
As part of the new legislation, the Vatican established an internal Financial Information Authority (FIA) along the lines of other countries and promised to liaise with the FATF and law enforcement agencies.
But the Moneyval report said there was "lack of clarity about the role, responsibility, authority, powers and independence of the FIA as a supervisor".
The IOR's most infamous scandal involved the collapse 30 years ago of the Banco Ambrosiano, with lurid allegations about money-laundering, freemasons, mafiosi and Calvi's mysterious death.
The IOR held a stake in Ambrosiano, then Italy's largest private bank, and investigators alleged that it was partly responsible for its fraudulent bankruptcy.
The IOR denied any role in the collapse, but paid $250 million to creditors in what it called a "goodwill gesture".
Several investigations have failed to determine whether Calvi killed himself or was murdered.

Fermilab scientists announced today that they've narrowed down the possible range of masses the Higgs particle can have, if it exists, to between 115 and 135?gigaelectron volts (GeV), a unit roughly equivalent to the mass of a proton.The findings are the result of a long and thorough analysis of particle collisions inside Fermilab's Tevatron accelerator. The machine,?the biggest atom smasher?in the United States, was shut down in 2011, but scientists are still poring through its measurements.
Now the Tevatron has been eclipsed by the larger and more powerful LHC, a17-mile (27 kilometer) underground loop beneath Switzerland and France. LHC scientists are due to announce the latest results from their search for the Higgs on July 4 at the International Conference on High Energy Physics in Melbourne, Australia.
Scientists have hinted that the LHC has come close to finding the Higgs boson, but that they aren't quite ready to announce its discovery.

KIEV, Ukraine - Just like clockwork, Spain's "tiki taka" passing game tore Italy apart.
The World Cup champions controlled the play Sunday in the European Championship final, as they usually do. They moved the ball up the field with short pass after short pass, as they usually do.
But, incredibly, they also managed to score a whopping four goals, something they don't usually do.
It all added up to a 4-0 win over Italy and a third straight major soccer title for Spain.
"We won being true to our playing style, and by moving the ball the we way we moved it we knew how to take charge of the match," said Spain goalkeeper Iker Casillas, the team's captain. "What we do is difficult but we make it look easy."
Casillas and Spain striker Fernando Torres also made their own histories. Torres became the first man to score in two European Championship finals, and Casillas played in his record 100th victory in international soccer.
Spain's other goals on Sunday at the Olympic Stadium came from David Silva, Jordi Alba and Juan Mata.
"We were superior to Italy," said midfielder Xavi Hernandez, perhaps Spain's most influential player over the last four years. "We played a complete game and perhaps the best of the entire European Championship. We made history."
Four years ago at Euro 2008, Spain ended a 44-year drought of major titles, beating Germany 1-0 in the final to start a run that has been unmatched by any other team in history.
Although they lost to the United States in the semifinals of the Confederations Cup in 2009, snapping a record 15-game winning streak, the Spanish have been nearly impossible to beat in competitive matches.
A year after that game against the Americans, Spain opened the 2010 World Cup with a loss to Switzerland. But they then went on a tear, winning their next six games to finally claim a World Cup title and undoubtedly shed for good the "underachiever" tag.
In all that time since Euro 2008, Spain has won with flair, using its short passing game ? dubbed "tiki taka" by the Spanish media and adopted by the team ? to dazzle scrambling opponents.
"Tonight, there was no contest," Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon said. "They were too superior, so the bitterness at losing this final is only relative."
Against Italy, Spain was the favorite, but was also primed to be beaten after being held to a 1-1 draw by the Italians in their opening Group C match. Spain, which has been experimenting with a lineup that excludes a recognized striker, needed a penalty shootout to reach the final after a 0-0 tie with Portugal in the semifinals.
"They've been playing at a very high level for years," Italy coach Cesare Prandelli said. "And even though they didn't use any traditional striker, they were able to give weight to their attack."
The controversial lineup, which Spain coach Vicente del Bosque again employed on Sunday, is akin to playing in the Super Bowl without a running back. Sure, you can still score touchdowns, but you give up on the chance for a game-breaking play.
Still, the midfielders and the defenders got the job done in the first half. Silva headed in a high shot in the 14th minute off a pass from Cesc Fabregas. And Alba added another in the 41st, picking up a beautiful through ball from Xavi and shooting past Buffon.
"The game was ours after the first goal, but the truth is that we played one heck of a game," Fabregas said.
Italy's task was tough enough with 11 players, and it became impossible with only 10 after the 64th minute. All its substitutes were used when midfielder Thiago Motta, who had only been on the field for seven minutes, was taken off with an injury.
Torres, who came on for Fabregas in the 75th minute, then added the third goal with a relatively easy finish and Mata really put the game away in the 88th, knocking in a pass from Torres.
"The second goal by Jordi hurt them, and then the third finished them off," said Casillas, who made a point-blank save on a shot from Antonio Di Natale at the start of the second half and twice tipped crosses out of danger just before the Italians could get their heads to the ball.
With every save, and of course with every goal, the huge group of Spain supporters cheered and screamed. The red-shirted fans dominated one corner of the stadium, filling up more than six sections of the Olympic Stadium. On the opposite side, the blue-clad Italians were far outnumbered, with dozens of empty yellow seats poking through the mass of supporters.
Also in the stands were several heads of state. Italian Premier Mario Monti, along with other EU leaders, had said they would not travel to Ukraine for the tournament because of the politically tainted jailing of former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko. But that didn't stop him from attending the final in Kiev.
Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy also attended the match, and got to watch as his players celebrated with confetti and fireworks when they lifted yet another major trophy.
"I don't believe it," said Alba, who has played only nine matches for Spain, "but little by little it is sinking in."

Five different players drove in runs for the Tigers, who beat the struggling Rays for the third time in four days. Tampa Bay, which didn't have a hit until the fifth inning, has dropped six of its last seven games.
Jackson snapped a 3-all tie with a RBI single off Alex Cobb (3-5). Fielder, voted as the starting first baseman for the AL All-Star team, singled off Jake McGee to make it 5-3 after the Tampa Bay reliever walked All-Star Miguel Cabrera intentionally with a runner on second base.
Ryan Raburn had a RBI single for Detroit in the fourth. Delmon Young and Alex Avila delivered sacrifice flies in the fifth off Cobb, who allowed five runs and eight hits in 5 1-3 innings.
The Rays led 1-0 despite not having a hit through three innings. Desmond Jennings drew a leadoff walk in the first, stole second base and advanced to third on a wild pitch before scoring on B.J. Upton's sacrifice fly. The Tigers tied it in the fourth on Raburn's RBI single, but wasted an opportunity to take control of the game.
Cobb kept the Rays in the game by regrouping after Raburn's hit to work out of a bases-loaded jam, getting Don Kelly to hit into a force play at the plate, striking out Ramon Santiago and coaxing Jackson to ground into a force. The Tampa Bay starter wasn't as fortunate when the Tigers loaded the bases with no outs again in the fifth.
Young's sacrifice fly snapped a 1-1 tie and Avila's made it 3-1.
The Rays finally broke through against Smyly for two runs in the fifth. Ben Zobrist doubled down the left-field line for the first hit off the left-hander and scored on Hideki Matsui's one-out single. Molina followed with his run-scoring double for a short-lived 3-3 tie.
Four Detroit relievers combined to limited the Rays to two hits over four scoreless innings. Jose Valverde worked a perfect ninth for his 15th save in 18 opportunities.
Notes: Fielder and Cabrera are joined on the All-Star team by teammate Justin Verlander. David Price and Fernando Rodney are Tampa Bay's All-Star selections. It's the third straight selection for Price and the third consecutive year the Rays have sent two pitchers to the . ... The Tigers completed a 10-game road trip. "It's been a long one," manager Jim Leyland said. "I know I have a lot of dirty shirts in my suitcase." ... Price, who left Friday night's start against the Tigers after seven innings because of lower back tightness, threw a bullpen session. He expects to make his next scheduled start on Wednesday against the Yankees.

There's a lot of great players at the top of the NBA Draft (Anthony Davis, Bradley Beal, Michael Kidd-Gilchrist to name a few) but with the Bulls holding the 29th pick, I wanted discuss a few "under the radar" players that I feel would provide the Bulls a great amount of depth to their roster.
Royce White: White (6'8" 270 lbs.) is a Power Forward who is an undersized player for the position but still can make a great impact off the Bulls bench. One of the best parts about Royce White's game is that for his size he's a great ball handler, in fact he brought the ball up for Iowa State last year. He might not have a definite position on the court, but he will for sure have an impact on the game and give a team even more ball-handlers on the court at all times.
Jeremy Lamb: The Bulls have been looking for an impact 2-guard for the past few years and as a Freshman Lamb helped UConn win a National Championship. During his second season at Connecticut (and Kemba Walker now in the NBA), Lamb became a much better scorer (went from averaging 11.1 points as a freshman to 17.7 points per game as a Sophomore) while still averaging over 4 rebounds per game. If the Bulls decide to draft Jeremy Lamb, I feel he would be a great starting 2-Guard, and would make a solid backcourt player with Derrick Rose for a number of years.
Will Barton: Another 2-Guard for the Bulls to consider; Will Barton struggled during his first season at Memphis (12.3, 4.9 rebounds, and while only shooting 42.8% from the field. However, as a Sophomore Barton had a significant impact on the Tigers roster as he averaged 18 points, 8 rebounds, and 3 Assists while shooting 50.9% from the field. Barton has the potential of being a great 2-Guard in this league and great size at 6'6".
Tyshawn Taylor: During his first four years at Kansas, Tyshawn Taylor wasn't seen as much of a "score" and was more of a facilitating guard his first three years in college. During his senior year, Taylor had a much bigger role in their offense as he averaged 16.6 points to go along with 4.8 Assists on the season. Taylor was a four-year player at Kansas and would be a great backup to Derrick Rose in the future.
John Jenkins: You can never have enough scorers on your team and with Jenkins he would provide the Bulls with another great scorer off the bench. Jenkins (6'4 and 215 lbs.) has one of the best jump-shots in this draft and would be able to help Derrick Rose spread the floor even more in the future.

If you saw the ridiculously cool?Google Glasses stunt that sent a handful of skydivers plummeting towards the ground to deliver a special package during?the company's I/O conference keynote, you were probably just as stunned as the rest of us. As we here at Tecca watched the event unfold live, we discussed the legality of the dive and wondered how?Google got official clearance to pull it off. The answer? They had the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) change its own rulebook.
You see, the airspace around San Francisco falls under "Class B" rules, meaning pilots need written permission just to cruise around the area, much less act as a skydiving platform. According to?TechCrunch, getting clearance to fly in the area isn't particularly difficult to get, but the rules state that zeppelins ? like the airship that Google was using ? are not allowed to open their doors while in the air. But when you're one of the world's largest companies, you don't simply play by the rules... you change them.
Google worked closely with the San Jose branch of the FAA to review the current laws regarding airships and convinced them to tweak the rules enough to allow the skydivers to swing the door open and make the jump. Once the pesky legal hurdles were out the way, the stunt went off without a hitch, and will likely be remembered as one of the coolest keynote surprises for many years to come.
