Leaked memo suggests India sought backdoor access from mobile device firms to spy on U.S.

By Muriel Kane
Sunday, January 8, 2012

?

An internal memo from India?s Military Intelligence that hackers have posted online suggests that manufacturers of mobile devices have provided ?backdoor? access to the Indian government in exchange for access to the Indian market. The manufacturers, referred to collectively in the memo as ?RINOA,? include RIM, Nokia, and Apple.

Indian blogger Manan Kakkar, who may have been the first to realize the implications of the memo, wrote late on Friday, ?Earlier today I came across scans of a set of documents that are internal communications between the Indian Military. The documents claim the existence of a system known as RINOA SUR. While I did not find what SUR stands for but RINOA is RIM, NOkia and Apple. And this is where things start to get very interesting, according to the set of documents, the RINOA SUR platform was used to spy on the USCC?the US-China Economic and Security Review Commission.?

Scans of the memo can be viewed here.

According to its website, ?The U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission was created by the United States Congress in October 2000 with the legislative mandate to monitor, investigate, and submit to Congress an annual report on the national security implications of the bilateral trade and economic relationship between the United States and the People?s Republic of China, and to provide recommendations, where appropriate, to Congress for legislative and administrative action.?

The USCC has taken a particular interest in cybersecurity threats emanating from China, which may explain the Indian government?s interest in its deliberations. A story published by the India Times in October, for example, noted that ?the bipartisan commission typically goes much further in publicly outlining perceived cyber threats to national security from Beijing than have U.S. administrations, which must deal with other issues on which China?s cooperation is critical.?

Kakkar also suggested a connection between the leaked memo and earlier reports of an attack on Symantec ? the makers of Norton Antivirus ? by a group of Indian hackers calling itself the Lords of Dharamraja.

A member of the group, known as Yama Tough, boasted at Google+ and Pastebin, ?As of now we start sharing with all our brothers and followers information from the Indian Militaty (sic) Intelligence servers, so far we have discovered within the Indian Spy Programme (sic) source codes of a dozen software companies which have signed agreements with Indian TANCS programme and CBI.?

[LindyBill] India has had it with Russian weapons and would, with some encourageme

India has had it with Russian weapons and would, with some encouragement from us, rearm from our suppliers. China is a natural enemy of theirs, as are their Muslim neighbors. They are being dragged, kicking and screaming, towards Capitalism. The more aggressive China gets, the more they will want to snuggle up to us.

Kanye West's 3-hour Twitter rant: 'The adrenaline is running' Zap2it

10:44 p.m. EST, January 5, 2012

On Wednesday (Jan. 4), Kanye West -- who'd been somewhat absent from Twitter of late -- embarked on a marathon session of tweets that covered much territory -- from his new design company to his thoughts on "London riots" and "Chicago murders."

"The adrenaline is running," tweets West. "I don't know if I can even get to sleep now."

West sent several 140-character missives about Donda, the new design company he's establishing named after his late mother, Donda West.

Donda will, he tweets, "pick up where Steve Jobs left off." He also added that the company is releasing a "semi sci-fi film" in 2012 and that he may become creative director of a "Jetsons" film. West also expressed an interest in designing an upcoming MTV Video Music Awards. (Hey, if you can't win 'em, may as well be involved somehow.)

"I know this is not a very rapper thing to say but I haven't bought a new car or piece of jewelry in about 2 years," he adds.

He also condemned the American educational system, tweeting, "Help education. School systems were designed to turn people into factory workers." He went on to suggest that kids be encouraged to use iPhones in school, not punished. He also details months he spent working undercover at Fendi and the Giuseppe Zanotti factory learning to design women's shoes.

LG, Samsung Join Google TV Alliance Ahead of CES

January 06, 2012, 7:17 AM EST

By Brian Womack

(Updates with Google comment in third paragraph.)

Jan. 5 (Bloomberg) -- LG Electronics Inc., Samsung Electronics Co. and MediaTek Inc. are joining Google Inc.?s Internet-TV coalition and plan to begin unveiling new products during next week?s Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

LG plans to showcase products at the conference, with Samsung unveiling TVs later this year, Google said today in a blog posting. Google TV, introduced in 2010, also has the support of Marvell Technology Group Ltd. and Sony Corp. Vizio Inc., another existing partner, will hold private demonstrations of new products at the electronics show as well.

?Google TV is about bringing new entertainment and innovation from the Web to TV,? Mountain View, California-based Google said on its blog. ?Our team along with our partners are pleased to bring more Google TV powered products to more people, across more devices in more countries in 2012.?

Google is shoring up support for the effort following slow initial sales for Google TV products. A lack of authorized content from media companies has made it harder to attract consumers to the idea. And one early partner, the set-top-box maker Logitech International SA, backed away from the coalition after disappointing orders.

New Version

Still, the platform has gained popularity since an updated version debuted in October, Google said. The company develops the software for the service and relies on manufacturers of TVs and other electronics to build products that work with the technology. Google is counting on the lineup to give it a foothold in consumers? living rooms and challenge products from Apple Inc. and Microsoft Corp.

?Since launching the update, we?ve seen our activation rates more than double,? Google said. ?New features and new apps are coming to the living room via Google TV almost every day. We now have more than 150 apps, which developers have specifically built for TV.?

Samsung had said in November that it was close to reaching an agreement to make televisions that run Google TV. LG also was expected to unveil a TV with the technology at the Consumer Electronics Show, people familiar with the matter said that month.

Google shares fell 1.4 percent to $659.01 at the close in New York. The stock gained 8.7 percent last year.

(AP) ? 2012 looks to be another year of opportunity for the few who can afford to buy or refinance a home.

The average rate on the 30-year fixed mortgage fell to 3.91 percent this week, Freddie Mac said Thursday. That matches the record low reached two weeks ago.

The average on the 15-year fixed mortgage ticked down to 3.23 percent from 3.24 percent. That's up from 3.21 percent two weeks, also a record low.

Mortgage rates are lower because they tend to track the yield on the 10-year Treasury note, which fell below 2 percent this week. They could fall even lower this year if the Fed launches another round of bond purchases, as some economists expect.

Still, cheap mortgage rates have done little too boost the depressed housing market. For eight straight weeks at the end of 2011, the average fixed mortgage rates hovered around 4 percent. Yet many Americans either can't take advantage of the rates or have already done so.

High unemployment and scant wage gains have made it harder for many people to qualify for loans. Many don't want to sink money into a home that they fear could lose value over the next few years.

Previously occupied homes are selling just slightly ahead of 2010's dismal pace. New-home sales in 2011 will likely be the worst year on records going back half a century.

Builders are hopeful that the low rates could boost sales next year. Low mortgage rates were cited as a key reason the National Association of Home Builders survey of builder sentiment rose in December to its highest level in more than a year.

But so far, rates are having no major impact. Mortgage applications have fallen slightly in recent weeks, according to the Mortgage Bankers Association.

To calculate the average rates, Freddie Mac surveys lenders across the country Monday through Wednesday of each week. The average rates don't include extra fees, known as points, which most borrowers must pay to get the lowest rates. One point equals 1 percent of the loan amount.

The average fee for the 30-year loan rose to 0.8 from 0.7; the average on the 15-year fixed mortgage was unchanged at 0.8.

For the five-year adjustable loan, the average rate declined to 2.86 percent from 2.88 percent. The average on the one-year adjustable loan rose to 2.80 percent from 2.78 percent.

The average fee on the five-year adjustable loan rose to 0.7 from 0.6; the average on the one-year adjustable-rate loan was unchanged at 0.6.

Military Widow Takes Chance on Love

QUANTICO, Va. - Kristen Clark's first husband was a Navy diver. He survived Iraq, but was killed in a motorcycle accident after returning home in 2005.

"Your world just falls out from underneath you," says Clark.

She was left a widow with three boys to raise. Eventually she began dating again. Four years later, her fianc?, who had been in the Coast Guard, died too.

She told herself then she never wanted to take another chance on love.

"Never wanted to go there. Never wanted to open my heart. Never wanted to even feel a sense of warmth or happiness because I was worried it was going to be taken away," says Clark.

Eventually she acknowledged something.

"I realized that with my kids and myself, we needed help," she says.

Clark finally built up the courage to fly her boys to something called TAPS Good Grief Camp. TAPS stands for tragedy assistance program for survivors.

Their plane was late, which meant she crossed paths with a Marine who was a mentor at the camp.

"Had the plane not been late, he never would have seen all five kids and I going crazy at the check-in spot.

What did the Marine think when he saw this lady with five kids?

?Well, I just saw an amazing testimony of a person who really had the will to go on. To be chasing five kids around. Trying to check in. Dragging bags. Just doing the best she could - on her own.?

She is on her own no more. On Saturday, in the chapel at Quantico, Kristen Clark will marry that Marine - Travis Hassell.

They've been frantically making the plans while juggling the care of six kids. Baby Issac is their latest addition.

"What changed my mind? Seeing the boys and how he was with them," says Clark.

And, she says, seeing her boys laughing again.

The couple plans to honeymoon in Virginia wine country. Then Travis has to get back to Japan where he's stationed. They're hoping that before too long the whole gang, kids and all, will be settled in Okinawa - living together as one big happy family.
