Historic handshake: Queen meets ex-IRA chief

Thirty-five years ago, Queen Elizabeth's silver jubilee was greeted with graffiti declaring "Victory to the IRA, stuff the jubilee."

Wednesday marked a highly significant turnaround as the queen, in her diamond jubilee year, met and shook hands with a?onetime senior Irish Republican Army commander who once stood against everything she represented and even considered her a legitimate target.

As a British person and a journalist, I never thought I'd see this day.

This is because I grew up with Northern Ireland. What does this mean? It means watching with incredulity as the IRA targeted the British establishment, including a sitting prime minister -- almost succeeding in assassinating her.

The "troubles," as they were diplomatically called, became part of everyday life. We watched clashes with soldiers on television. News of bombings was a constant drip-drip in the news. It was one of those things that as a boy and a young man, I thought would never end.?

So the meeting with Martin McGuinness, the first between the queen and a senior member of the IRA or its political wing Sinn Fein, is a landmark in the peace process 14 years after the militant group ended its 30-year campaign against British rule.

On Tuesday, she held a private meeting with relatives of the 11 people killed in a 1987 bombing in Enniskillen, an?attack that sparked a wave of revulsion against the IRA and helped convince its leadership to engage in the peace process.

Few will know what the queen was thinking. But surely it was a difficult event for her, and not just because of the more than 3,500 killed in the conflict, 1,800 of whom were innocent civilians, according to The Guardian.

It is doubtless especially poignant for her because her cousin, Lord Mountbatten, was killed in 1979 when the IRA?blew up his boat in Southern Ireland.?He was the man who many believe was responsible for the queen's marriage to Prince Philip, and was a guiding influence to the heir-to-the-throne Prince Charles.

The countless threats her family has lived with must have contributed to a feeling of unease ahead of the meeting. But the queen's real thoughts will probably never be known, nor will her reaction when she was advised to perform this duty.

And it wasn't only the queen who was taking a chance -- it came at a cost for McGuinness too. He was being branded a traitor, with a lot of republicans saying that he has sold out and betrayed the principles they stand for.

Republicans protested against Wednesday's meeting, and McGuinness' decision could hurt his political ambitions.

British reaction on a political level has by and large been supportive, despite the bitterness and painful memories of the past.

Norman Tebbit, a former Conservative Party Chairman and a survivor of a deadly bombing in the seaside city of Brighton that targeted Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, saw it as a victory over the IRA.

Before Wednesday's event, Tebbit wrote in?The Telegraph?that the meeting would be a victory for the queen, the monarchy and Great Britain:?

"I am glad that Mr McGuinness appears to have now accepted on behalf of IRA/Sinn Fein the sovereignty of Her Majesty over Northern Ireland, and I hope that this is a step towards a public recompense and confession of his regret for the violence unleashed by them in his name."

While the meeting does not mark the end of tensions in Northern Ireland, it draws a line under a conflict that cost the lives of thousands and beset the queen for half of her reign.

9 tips to help you get a good night's sleep | Joined Up Business ...

I looked at the clock? 01:00. Damn, I knew I had to wake up in 4 hours time, and despite my best efforts I?d not managed to full asleep since going to bed 3 hours ago. My body was tired, I was yawning but my brain seems to be wired and despite my best efforts refused all attempts to shut it down.

I always found it incredibly tough to get a good night?s sleep before my fortnightly breakfast networking meeting. I?d be worrying about my 60 seconds, anxious about whether the alarm would turn on?.

So what can you do to get a good night?s sleep before you go breakfast networking? Lots as it happens?

1) Do some exercise after work

This helps to reduce the amount of adrenaline you have circulating in your body. Very often when we have a long day at work we will over-adrenalise our bodies to get the work done. Exercise is a great way of helping you de-stress (another major cause of insomnia) as well as removing adrenaline from your body. Exercise helps you produce serotonin, which is the precursor to melanomin, which is the chemical that helps our body go into deep sleep.

2) Have a wind down routine

A set wind down routine before bed time is a great way of helping you relax and programme your brain to prepare your body for sleep. Doing some relaxation exercises or yoga or Pilates is a great way to shut your mind down.

3) Reduce your caffeine intake

Too much caffeine keeps our brains alert and awake. Aim to limit your caffeine after midday and drink decaffeinated versions of coffee and tea if possible.

4) Eat sleep-inducing foods

Hot milk, horlicks, hot chocolate, bananas and dark chocolate all contain chemicals that help you sleep.?Pass me some chocolate please!

5) Avoid eating rich, greasy large meals late at night

These can all stop you from sleeping well, particularly if you are suffering from heartburn or indigestion.

6) Avoid working late

This one is my worst enemy. When I am working in the evening on my latest book project, I struggle to get to sleep as my mind is still active. Although it is not always possible, aim to leave time between stopping thinking about work, and when you want to go to bed.

7) Keep your phone and iPad out of the bedroom.

The bedroom is for sleeping (and perhaps a few other things!), but you need to train your brain that your bed is not for working. Plus, I don?t know about you but the amount of times an alert on my phone will wake me up? If needs be, get a separate kindle rather than read books on your kindle app on your phone or iPhone in bed.

Do something else

If you find yourself tossing and turning for more than 30 minutes. Change what you are doing. Go to the toilet, get a hot drink, read a book, listen to some calming music. This can help you out of a pattern of struggling to sleep.

S and R: no baby blues

I'm at that point in life where babies are pretty much on my brain
all the time.? I can look at a plant and feel jealous that it's creating fruit and I'm not.? Yes.? Really.? I'm envious of my
zucchini plant!

This is a very weird thing to say, but it's true!? No matter what I'm doing throughout the day, something will suddenly remind me that I'm lacking progeny and my sky will turn grey.? A beautiful pregnant woman will walk in and I can't even look them in the eye because I'm so envious.? Little kids pulling fits over cookies and lemonade seem adorable.? Even the hissy whines of toddlers and surprising high pitched fits of small children screaming unexpectedly in a department store or restaurant strike me as cute and natural, lovely really.

My body is obviously under some form of insane hormonal attack, as I sob thru Disney movies, make googly eyes at babies and find myself wanting to take notes when I hear advice on topics of pregnancy, birth and child rearing.? Maybe my little family isn't ready to grow to be bigger, but my mind and body would leap at the chance.

So.? In honor to my insane hormones driving me batty, I'm going to make a list of all the awesome things I get to enjoy doing right now that I won't get to enjoy further down the road when my life is filled with other joys ...? hopefully baby related joys... many years down the road from now.

I need to appreciate how easy and uncomplicated life is right now.? Filled with free time and friends, learning and creativity.? Projects.? Movies.? Self improvement!? Hoorah!

I don't have to think too much about my schedule and I get to leave the house whenever I want.

I get to have a beer whenever I gosh darn feel like it.
A bike ride in the middle of the day? Don't mind if I do!
Oh.? Do I feel like a movie in the middle of the afternoon..why not!
Randomly call up a friend for an unexpected hang out!
Stroller accessible?? Who cares!
I night out to a fancy restaurant with drinks after and a long walk is just fine.

An extra shift at work just because!
Oh...the R man wants to go to a party next week, well sure, we don't need a babysitter yet!
?I could sit down and read an entire book and not be interrupted.
I can cook whatever I like, whenever I'm hungry.

This all being said, don't take it the wrong way...if you yourself have children, I would gladly trade all my freedom for what you have...you are the luckiest freaking person on the planet if you have a kiddo in your life and don't you forget it!? With every day that goes by and more of my friends tell me of their unexpected news, I'm over joyed for them, of course!? But my heart does hurt just a little bit that I don't have the same exciting adventure planned...I just have to remember...some day...it'll happen!

Lincecum working every angle to figure out funk

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Tim Lincecum looks back at his extreme, 30-pound weight loss before this season and wishes he had approached it all differently.

He insists he dropped it too fast, taking drastic measures. All because the two-time NL Cy Young Award winner didn't feel quite right at the 190 pounds he reached in 2011 eating whatever he wanted, whenever he wanted. The thing is, he was still winning then. But his body began to hurt, in ways it never had before.

He only just turned 28 on June 15.

"It's kind of coming to terms with my mortality," Lincecum said in a candid, 10-minute interview Saturday. "I always thought, `Oh, I'm never going to be sore.' Like as a kid growing up, I was never sore. I never hurt, I could bounce back from things. I was like - I don't even know, what kind of animal rebounds from everything? - a dog. They bump their head and forget about it four seconds later."

Now, the San Francisco Giants right-hander (2-8) has added 10 pounds back on his slender frame to get to 167 - and some scouts think he should keep pounding the junk food and calories because, perhaps, a little more on his body will lead to much more on his suddenly slower fastball and even his off-speed pitches that no longer zing as they did in his dominant days that at the moment seem so long ago.

Lincecum believes he made strides in his start Friday night at Oakland, even after a 43-pitch inning in which he fell behind 3-0 but found his rhythm in time to strike out the side. He didn't earn a decision in his team's 5-4 comeback win against the Athletics.

Manager Bruce Bochy had reliever Shane Loux warming up in the bullpen in the first but never had to go out early to replace Lincecum, who wound up lasting six innings while giving up three hits and no more runs. He struck out eight and walked four.

"That's the last thing I wanted to do. That would've been rock bottom for the kid," Bochy said. "It was more a credit to Timmy. He just had enough. He found his game at the right time, thank goodness. We have a lot of baseball left. This is a good start, I'll say that."

Yet Lincecum still hasn't won in 10 starts since beating San Diego on April 28, going 0-6 in the worst drought in a career that featured four All-Star selections in his first four full seasons after being selected 10th overall in the 2006 draft out of Washington and making his major league debut the following May.

After the first, Lincecum repeatedly told fellow starter Ryan Vogelsong how furious he had become, sprinkling in his regular array of curse words in their conversation.

"He called me over," Vogelsong said. "I didn't tell him anything he doesn't know. I just kind of reminded him, `Hey, keep going."'

On Saturday, Lincecum spent much of his time before the middle game of the Bay Bridge Series studying film in a corner of the clubhouse before heading to the training room for a rubdown on his back.

"As a pitcher, we get caught up in the fact that as a pitcher we're the center of attention, we've got to control the pace of the game and when we can't control things it upsets us," he said. "To not be able to control it at a level like this and also when it's continuously happening it kind of makes you check yourself and look in the mirror. ...

"Last night was the closest I think I got back to being myself. For me to say this is going to be the light switch that turns on and changes everything, I can't really say that. I still gave up three runs. I take that in the back of my mind. It's slicing unneeded pieces of clay away from the masterpiece or the work of art you're trying to make. For me that's, I wouldn't say reinventing myself but finding the edges, taking care of the things I wasn't necessarily worried about before. Until last night it was eluding me. To find things in the midst of (stinking) is kind of nice and refreshing."

Lincecum considers his latest struggles a much different case than the 0-5 August he endured in 2010 before rebounding and becoming the winning pitcher in the Game 5 World Series clincher at Texas that fall that brought the Giants their improbable championship - the first for the city since the franchise moved West from New York in 1958.

"To be honest, I was lazy. I was a lazier person," Lincecum said. "Now, I don't feel like that's the case, I feel like I'm putting more time in between my starts and focusing better. That's also why it makes it so hard to look at yourself. It's easy to come into a game and not work as hard as everybody else has to and do well, and be like, `Ha, I didn't have to do everything you guys did.'

"Now, I'm working as hard as they are, not because I feel I have to keep up with them, but because I know the game and I need to. The game calls upon you to do that. In 2010 in August ... it wasn't about me, it was the bigger picture. I'm a big believer in karma and things happen for a reason, and that August for me was a big wakeup call. I think this is a different animal."

Lincecum's fastball tops out these days at 92-93 mph but is often 90-91, a significant difference from his former 94 mph average. Whether he will regain some of his velocity with more weight on, nobody is sure.

"I want to feel I'm at a comfortable weight but I know I fluctuate so easily," Lincecum said. "I know I'm a picky eater, so that's even harder. When you come into a room and there's nothing but vegetables, you go, `I'll just have a shake' or something like that. It's just holding yourself accountable and remembering to do stuff.

"Last year I'd eat anything I wanted and I didn't even care. I was like, `I don't care, I'm fat, I'm thicker than I'm used to being and I'm doing fine.' Then my body started feeling different. My legs started feeling the effects of the 30-plus pounds I'd put on. Anybody putting on 30-plus pounds is going to feel the effect.

"What happened is then I just completely changed it. I don't think that's a smart move either and I don't think the way I got rid of it was smart. I got rid of it way too fast, drastically. My focus became more getting back to my normal weight than pitching, throwing."

And, just because he is beginning to feel his age, that doesn't mean The Freak will start icing his arm - or any other body part for that matter - any time soon.

"I don't know," he said. "I don't think my dad would agree with that."

Is China more business-friendly than the United States?

A recent post on WFOE-formation over at the China Law Blog confirmed my view of some remarks that struck me as asinine when they were first reported last year: Coca-Cola CEO Muhtar Kent's statement that China had a more business-friendly environment than the United States. OK, if you're the CEO of a major multinational being wined and dined as you hobnob with senior leaders, maybe China looks pretty good. But is the Chinese economy really going to achieve sustainable development by catering just to the needs of major multinationals? How about the smaller enterprises that create employment and innovation? The difficulties faced by small and private companies in getting financing in China are well known; I won't go further into that issue here. But look at what's required (among other things) just to set up a wholly foreign-owned enterprise in China:

5. Lease on office space for the WFOE. The lease must be valid for at least one year beyond the eventual approval date for the WFOE. Since approval may take some time, it is best to have the initial term of the lease be at least one-and-a-half to two years. The lease must be in proper format and must be registered with the local real estate authority. We will also need proof that the landlord owns the property in question and has the authority to enter into the lease. This is usually proved by provision of a land rights certificate and proof of existence of the landlord (National ID for an individual, business license for a company). We will work with you during the leasing phase to ensure the lease is properly executed and that the landlord has proper authority. Prior to your entering into the lease, we will determine whether the proposed use is permitted for the premises and whether the proposed address is acceptable for a WFOE. Leases are often the biggest obstacle for WFOEs, so this is a matter to address right away. Note also that the specific details of the documentation requirements for a WFOE depend on the district where the WFOE will be formed. We therefore need to know the proposed address for the WFOE or at least the proposed district before we can make a final determination of the exact procedures that will be required for WFOE formation. Note also that we cannot even begin the registration process in China until we know the address of the proposed registered office for the WFOE, as well as the proposed use. This highlights the importance of the lease in the registration process.

6. We must specify the scope of business of the WFOE. Please provide a statement of what services the WFOE will perform on a daily basis. We need reasonable detail for this, but no more than one page. The scope of business should address the following questions, among others:

How many employees will be working there? Are they full-time or part-time? Will they be working in the leased space or off-site?

Will the number of employees vary over time?

What is the nationality of these employees?

What will each of these employees be doing in this rented space ? will they be programming? consulting? buying? selling? manufacturing? providing customer support? managing other employees? something else?

Who are the customers of the business? That is, who will be paying for the services provided by the WFOE?

What is the projected cash flow of the business? Where will income go (i.e., to the WFOE, to the parent, to an affiliated entity)? How will expenses be paid (i.e., directly by the WFOE, by the parent, by an affiliated entity, etc.)? Where will the WFOE get its money to operate?

The scope of business will also be used in the company name as noted in Question 4. above.

No doubt some reasonable justification could be found for any particular one of these hoops to be jumped through, but when you put them all together (and remember, I'm just citing a few of them) one cannot avoid the feeling that the authorities view businesses as basically operations that are Up To No Good and that need to be carefully monitored and controlled. The idea that the future is unpredictable and that businesses should be able to adjust quickly to changing circumstances seems utterly alien to this regulatory model.

Note that the model also assumes that the bureaucrats reviewing information about, say, the number and duties of employees or the projected cash flow will have the expertise to use that information to make decisions that serve whatever government policy they are supposed to be implementing in their decision-making. Color me doubtful.

Keeping Jobs in Binghamton

Town of Dickinson, NY (WBNG Binghamton) Hundreds of people join the hunt at a job fair at Broome Community College.

The Greater Binghamton Chamber of Commerce hosted its annual summer job fair at BCC.

More than 50 businesses throughout the Southern Tier came, hoping to do some hiring.

The Chamber says that with graduation happening throughout the area, it's the perfect time to show students that there are available jobs in the Southern Tier.

The New York State Department of Labor set up a booth to look over resumes and helped with interview tips.

"We have such a variety of companies here today that I think honestly there's something here for every level of education," says organizer Vikki Collazo.

There were also education training programs available for people who needed extra resume boosters before they enter the workforce.
