Book review: ?Slim for Life? by Jillian Michaels & Hard Body DVD ...

She became ?America?s toughest trainer? after helping contestants shred a ton of weight on the hit TV show ?Biggest Loser.? and she makes no excuses for her ?tough love? attitude.

Whether it is the countless contestants or you at home, Jillian Michaels wants you to live your best life. Having grown up overweight herself, she has learned what it takes to get results. If you have tried one of her many hardcore workout DVDs or read any one her books, one thing is for sure, she gets results.

Last month, Michaels released her seventh diet book ? that she actually never thought she would write ? ?Slim for Life.? According to Michaels, ?Slim for Life? is everything she has learned over more than 20 years as a health and wellness expert and created a simpler approach to helping people slim down for good.

?There is so much conflicting information out there that it is easy to feel confused and overwhelmed when it comes to losing weight and keeping it off,? she says. ?In the book, I share simple strategies and tips for eating, exercising, shopping and living with no gimmicks. I break through all the myths and misconceptions to share information that people can really use and customize to their daily lives.

?It really is the best of what works to help give everyone the body, health and life that we all want and deserve in the easiest most cost effective way possible.?

Q: What is some of that bad advice you can?t believe people will follow?

A: There are so many. A couple big ones:

MYTH: High-protein

low-carbohydrate diets are a healthy way to lose weight. FACT: Complex carbs are a necessary source of essential vitamins and minerals that the body needs. Fat comes from too many calories, not too many carbs.

MYTH: Eating small, frequent meals boosts Your metabolism. FACT: It is based on the theory that if you keep adding small amounts of food to your fire (that fire being your metabolism) you?ll keep it going strong and burn more calories overall. The OPPOSITE is true. If you keep adding food to the fire, you?ll never dig into your fat stores.

The goal is actually to eat every four hours. In the book I explain my ?Four-by-Four? rule. Eat four times a day, every four hours. This means one substantive, healthy snack between lunch and dinner. This will help stabilize your blood sugar, optimize insulin production and manage hunger ? all of which are critical to weight loss and staying slim.

Q: What are some of the areas we slip up on and need to be more mindful of?

A: What we eat. Not just the number of calories ? which can still be an issue as it is so easy to eat more calories than we realize ? but things like skipping meals, eating processed foods filled with chemicals, and grazing all day are all common mistakes that can really get things off track very quickly. Another big one is lack of sleep. So many of us don?t get enough sleep (7 to 8 hours) and this does play a critical role in the effort to lose weight.

Q: I like how flexible ?Slim for Life? is. A lot of health books can be very regimented and unrealistic. You have created eight chapters that are like a challenge with points awarded to your slim suggestions. The higher the points you attain the faster the results. Can you explain how this all works?

A: The point system is an important part of making ?Slim for Life? customizable to the individual, so the plan they choose lasts forever. I know that it isn?t realistic for people to do every single thing in the book every minute of every day. The points system is essentially a ?hierarchy of slim? that specifically tells you which tips and pieces will give you the most bang for your weigh-loss buck.

3?s are the most powerful and important, 2?s are solid and useful but not utterly essential and 1?s are a nice add on. All will help you get slim, so you you like one more than another, have at it. The whole point of ?Slim for life? is to create a structure that works for you.

Q: We are a world of quick fixes, and while we know there aren?t any, do you feel that weight training and circuit training can get us fit more quickly than long bouts of cardio?

A: You can see great results fast when you work out smart and hard. I definitely understand how tough it can be to find the time for a workout. I don?t have a lot of time for mine, but I make sure they are very effective and work out HARD when I hit the gym.

Working multiple muscle groups at the same time and doing high-intensity interval training circuits to really blast the heart rate are both key in seeing great results in less time.

Q: While diet and exercise are the more important part of a healthy lifestyle, you also touch upon other things in our lives that can be roadblocks preventing us from reaching full potential such as cleaning and hygiene products, traveling and even the way we dress.

A: As I mentioned above, sleep is really crucial. And so many of us neglect it all the time. The fact is, sleep plays a huge role in our hormones, our metabolism, our energy levels and more. It is crucial that we get sleep.

Another thing we can do is work to be as natural as possible. Not just in the food we eat, but in the products that we use. Chemicals really have no place in or on our bodies and can wreak havoc on our metabolism. Going natural as much as possible can make a big difference.

Q: I could totally visualize you spraying Heidi?s cookies with dry shampoo in your section called ?Wreck Havoc.? I?ve actually seen some reality TV people do this. How do we do this and not just reach for something else?

A: The key is too control your environment. Will power is like a muscle: The more you use it the more fatigued it gets. Remove temptation whenever and wherever possible. So if you destroy the cookies, make sure you don?t have cake in the fridge.

Q: Eating at night has always been a big no-no. You say we can, but just no carbs three hours before bed. What would be Jillian approved evening meals and snacks?

A: I really don?t snack before bed. I?m pretty good at adhering to the 4-by-4 rule, but if I did I might have veggie sticks and hummus. A low-fat cheese stick with a couple slices of turkey. A deviled egg. Some turkey or beef jerky and so on.

Q: On March 5, you will release another killer DVD, Hard Body. How does this DVD fit in with the book?s advice, and what else should we do the other five days? (see below for my review of the DVD)

A: My DVDs essentially take all my fitness advice and make it failproof for you. There is no thinking required on the part of the consumer. They simply pop in the DVD and I provide all the knowledge. They simply need to show up!

Q: Now that you have added two little ones to your already busy life, how has your diet and exercise regimen changed to fit it all in? Moms never seem to find the time for themselves to work out and often grab-n-go snacks in their free time. What are some of your top tips for fitting it all in and taking care of yourself?

A: It?s true. With two small children at home, I have to work my workouts into the schedule in any way I can. Sometimes this means hitting the gym while my mom watches the kids. Sometimes this means getting on the treadmill or doing a DVD workout after the kids have gone to sleep.

I also do everything I can to be active WITH my kids. I take the baby for a hike in the Bjorn. Or I take my toddler in a sidecar for a bike ride. I do all I can to both keep myself fit and set a good example for my kids, creating healthy habits early.

When it comes to food, I make sure to have healthy alternatives on hand, so they are easy and readily available. Raw almonds, non-fat greek yogurt, organic string cheese, even Popchips when I?m feeling like a little treat. The key is to having healthy choices at the ready on those busy days.

Q: Finish this sentence: ??Slim for Life? is not another diet book, it?s a ??

A: way of life that will make you happier and healthier ? permanently.

Cause of Florida sinkhole tragedy: Human activity or revenge of the karst?

One of the most heavily developed states is also one of the most geologically hazardous ? two facts that are not mutually exclusive in creating dangerous sinkholes.

By Patrik Jonsson,?Staff writer / March 2, 2013

Family members console each other near the home where Jeff Bush disappeared as a large sinkhole opened under the bedroom of his house on Friday in Seffner, Fla.

The news of a man being swallowed up by the earth as he slept in his Seffner, Fla., house seemed shocking precisely because it was so unusual: Only three men, two of them well drillers, are known to have ever died from a sudden sinkhole in Florida.

Yet the tragic series of events that began Thursday as a 30-foot hole swallowed Jeff Bush as he slept and continues Saturday as rescue crews tiptoe around an "extremely unstable" house also highlights just how geologically hazardous the Sunshine State is, and how human activities have likely increased the number of sinkholes ? essentially geological plumbing breaks as the ceilings of carved-out limestone caverns buckle.

Within a mile of Mr. Bush's home, which apparently sits atop a 100-foot-wide cavern, are 16 verified sinkholes, compared to over 15,000 known sinkholes throughout the state.

Known as a "karst" landscape, Florida, which was once part of the seafloor, sits on a vast limestone bed cratered with caverns dug out over eons of tidal and chemical weathering. About 10 percent of the earth's landmass is karst, meaning land shaped by eroding bedrock.

"What feels capricious to those above is the toll of an active planet, one of those improbable collisions of a human timescale and a geological one," writes the Atlantic's Rebecca Rosen on Friday.

Thursday night's sinkhole drama did not fit the usual progression of dissolving karst, however. Sinkholes usually collapse in slow motion. Walls crack, strain, and complain as the earth begins to slowly give way under a house. In the vast majority of cases, residents have enough time to gather valuables and evacuate the premises.

"Losing a house to a sinkhole is very common, losing life is uncommon," says retired University of Florida geologist Tony Randazzo. "Most people will have some warning of the pending doom or catastrophic collapse. But there apparently were no warning signs of what happened at the Bush house. That would be very scary."

Witnesses said the house jarred suddenly, and then they heard yells from a bedroom. Jeff Bush's brother, Jeremy Bush, ran to the hole, jumped in and began digging for his brother.

"I heard my brother screaming," Bush told reporters.? "So I ran back there and tried going inside his room."

A responding deputy told ABC News what he saw as he entered the panicked premises.

"When I turned in the bedroom the only thing that I saw was a hole, and the hole took the entire bedroom," Hillsborough County Sheriff's Deputy Douglas Duvall told a local ABC News affiliate. "You could see the bed frame, the dresser. Everything was sinking."

Mr. Duvall yelled to Jeremy Bush that the house was still collapsing and to get out of the hole. He reached in and pulled a stunned Mr. Bush out.

Changes in drainage due to construction or agricultural irrigation have been known to activate mass outbreaks of sinkholes, where dozens of sinkholes can suddenly appear next to drainage wells and farm fields. Drought followed by heavy rains can also instigate sinkholes as heavy, water-logged earth presses down on limestone caves suddenly devoid of buoyant water. The two previous deaths attributed to sinkholes both involved professional well drillers whose activities cracked the top of limestone caverns, causing collapse.

"Humans can [destabilize karst landscapes] by drawing down water tables or irrigate too much, increasing the weight of the mass of materials that sits on top of the void," says Jonathan Martin, a geologist at the University of Florida, in Gainesville. "Humans can modify the environment" enough to cause sinkholes.

It's not yet clear what caused the Seffner sinkhole, however, but geologists say the area, which is part of the heavily populated I-4 corridor that crosses Florida's midriff from Tampa to Daytona, is particularly prone to sinkhole collapses.

Sinkholes affect so many properties in Florida that the legislature in 2011 changed the law to make it harder to claim sinkhole damages.

"Over the years the [sinkhole] costs to insurance companies have been increasing at an extraordinary rate, because the legislature prevented companies from charging rates in line with the risk," says Mr. Randazzo. "It finally reached the point where the insurance companies won the day and got the legislature to change the law, significantly weakening the sinkhole protections in the state of Florida."

Mich. governor declares Detroit fiscal emergency

Gov. Rick Snyder of Michigan on Friday declared a fiscal state of emergency in Detroit in a move that could lead to the appointment of a financial manager who could file for the largest municipal bankruptcy ever.

Snyder's decision allows the city a 10-day grace period to formulate a plan to fix its finances before the governor reconsiders appointing an emergency manager who would likely drastically reduce services.

The Republican governor said he had identified a top candidate for the position, but he declined to name the person.

"I believe it's appropriate to declare the city of Detroit in financial emergency," Snyder said at a forum in Detroit.

Snyder said he agreed with a Feb. 19 report by a six-member team of experts that concluded Michigan's largest city is in dire financial shape and a plan put in place last April to aid Detroit was not sufficiently working.

The expert team Snyder assembled in December did not officially recommend the appointment of an emergency financial manager, leaving that decision up to the governor.

Detroit officials now have 10 days to request a hearing with the governor about his determination.

After the hearing or the expiration of the 10 days in the case of no hearing, the governor confirms or revokes his determination. A confirmation will assign management of Detroit's fiscal emergency to a Local Emergency Financial Assistance Loan Board composed of three state officials, including the treasurer, who are all Snyder appointees. That board would also appoint a manager for the city, under the current state law.

Detroit officials also will have the ability to appeal the fiscal emergency determination in state court. But that move would likely not delay the appointment of a manager, who could ultimately recommend the city file for bankruptcy. A Chapter 9 municipal bankruptcy by Detroit would be the largest ever in the United States.

Detroit has faced the steepest population decline of any American city in recent decades. Once the fifth largest U.S. city that shone as the birthplace of the U.S. automotive industry and Motown music, it now ranks 18th with about 700,000 people - after suffering a 25 percent decline in population between 2000 and 2010.

With the exodus of residents and jobs as the auto industry contracted, the city has suffered from declining tax revenue and rising crime while saddled with the infrastructure and labor costs of a bygone era.

An emergency financial manager for Detroit would have the power to develop a financial plan, revise or reject budgets, consolidate departments, enter into service contracts with other local governments, reduce or eliminate the salaries of elected officials, sell eligible city assets, lay off workers and renegotiate labor contracts. The manager cannot abrogate labor contracts or impose taxes without voter approval under the state's 1990 law.

A new Michigan law that takes effect March 28 will allow existing emergency financial managers to remain in place and will give them additional powers, including the ability to revise or terminate collective bargaining agreements.

Plan floated at U.N. to lift Somalia arms embargo for a year

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - A proposal to lift a U.N. arms embargo on the Somalian government for a year but leave in place restrictions on weapons like surface-to-air missiles has been floated among a deeply split 15-member U.N. Security Council, diplomats said on Wednesday.

The Somali government has requested that the 21-year-old arms embargo be lifted so it can strengthen its poorly equipped, ill-disciplined military - more a group of rival militias than a cohesive fighting force loyal to a single president - to battle al Qaeda-affiliated Islamist rebels.

A draft resolution to renew a U.N.-mandated African Union peacekeeping force in Somalia, reconfigure the U.N. mission and decide on the arms embargo request is likely to be circulated among Security Council members this week, diplomats said.

The Security Council is scheduled to vote on the resolution next Wednesday before the mandate of the 17,600-strong AU peacekeeping force, known as AMISOM, expires the next day, March 7.

"What we may see is a lifting for a defined period ... as far as the government itself is concerned but with some caveats," said a council diplomat. "For example, excluding some types of equipment, which would continue to be embargoed."

He said the proposed defined period could be a year.

The United States has been urging council members to agree to demands by the government in Mogadishu for the embargo to be lifted, while Britain and France were reluctant, council diplomats said. Negotiations were ongoing, they said.

The Security Council imposed the embargo in 1992 to cut the flow of arms to feuding warlords, who a year earlier ousted dictator Mohamed Siad Barre and plunged Somalia into civil war. The country last year held its first national vote since 1991 to elect a president and prime minister.

SUPPORT VERSUS SECURITY

"It sends shivers down the spine," one council diplomat said of the proposal to lift the embargo. "This move would come with significant security risks and would set a deplorable precedent as the situation is still extremely volatile."

He said the current embargo provided sufficient exemptions for the Somali security forces to be properly equipped and that the council was very divided over the issue.

Another U.N. diplomat said the Security Council's Monitoring Group on Somalia and Eritrea, an independent panel that reports on compliance with U.N. sanctions, had reported that some al Qaeda-linked al Shabaab militants had infiltrated units of the Somali security forces.

U.N. monitors have also warned that the Islamist militants in the Horn of Africa nation are receiving weapons from distribution networks linked to Yemen and Iran, diplomats have told Reuters.

"There's a good argument for sending a strong signal that Somalia now has a government that is increasingly establishing itself as a proper government ... but on the other hand of course there is continuing concern about security," a council diplomat said.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said earlier this month that the council should consider lifting the arms embargo to help rebuild Somalia's security forces and consolidate military gains against al Shabaab militants.

AU troops from Uganda, Burundi, Kenya and Ethiopia are battling al Shabaab militants on several fronts in Somalia and have forced them to abandon significant territory in southern and central areas of the Horn of Africa country.

The militants, who merged with al Qaeda in February last year, launched their campaign against the government in early 2007, seeking to impose sharia, or strict Islamic law, on the entire country.
